Haringey is a north London borough that contains areas both residential and commercial in character. In any case, we are talking about a place that you are going to love living in. The London Borough of Haringey has a total population of 272 900 and covers a territory 29.59 square kilometres. Among other things it is home to the world famous Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

Famous landmarks in the London Borough of Haringey

There are several pretty great locations in Haringey that are worth checking out, such as:

  • Alexandra PalaceAlexandra Palace – located in the eponymous public park, Alexandra Palace is one of the most iconic entertainment venues of Victorian England. It was conceived as the North London counterpart of Crystal Palace. It became home to the BBC “high-definition” television broadcast in 1936.
  • Bruce Castle is a Grade I listed 17th century house. It is believed that the current manor house stands on much older buildings, but either way Bruce Castle is the oldest surviving brick building in England, which is precisely why it is so revered by history and architecture buffs. Some sources hint to the construction date of the original Bruce Castle as being at some time in the 1400s.
  • Jacksons Lane is a public art venue located in Archway Road, in a converted Methodist Church. The venue contains a theatre, a large scale dance studio, a bar and several multi-purpose spaces. It was opened in 1975 and since then has been supporting some 100 artists every year.
  • Highpoint I & II are residential buildings that were constructed in 1930 and 1938 respectively. They are named that way because the two blocks are built on top of one of the highest points of London. One can only imagine what a pleasure it would be to live in such a place.

Great residential areas in Haringey

If you are looking for the best places in the borough you can pick up from a lot of options. You should not miss to check out several locations though. One of those is the district of Crouch End N8, home to a number of notable buildings such as the Hornsey Town Hall. Crouch End is actually a pretty vibrant area that is known for its active live music scene and recording studios. The area is frequently features on film and television, including on EastEnders, Peep Show, Shaun of the Dead, Whitechapel and many other productions.

Finsbury Park is another great choice. This residential area is developed around the public park of the same name. Another very important feature which stimulated the development of the district was the rather important railway interchange on the border between the three London boroughs – Islington, Haringey and Hackney. A bit more than 14 000 people live in the area which has a rather cosmopolitan feel thanks to the close proximity of Central London, the good transport connections and the great variety of independent shops and boutique stores across the territory of the district itself.

We would encourage you to check out Fortis Green N10 too. If there is a middle class district in Haringey, that would be Fortis Green. The majority of the 12 000 people are skilled workers and professionals. Notable current and former residents of the area include the names of such important people as Duckett’s CommonOliver Erichson Janson, and William Bernhardt Tegetmeier., as well as The Kinks members Ray and Dave Davies (Dave actually has a solo album named Fortis Green), and of course Simon Nicol, who started the  Fairport Convention group from his family home in Fortis Green.

The last place we would like to point your attention to is the district that actually gives its name to the whole borough. Harringey. It is a mainly residential area in the section of Green Lanes that runs from New River and the Duckett’s Common. The total population of Harringey is 13 272. Green Lanes is of course the main shopping area of the district. The town centre is pretty cosmopolitan in character, but the overall population of the surrounding residential streets is said to be much more homogeneous. Harringey is 8.9 kilometres to the North of Charing Cross and is served by Harringay Green Lanes railway station and Manor Park tube station.
