Known Areas In The London Borough of Hounslow

The Borough of Hounslow lies in the western parts of London. It was created on April, 1st 1965 and is currently one of the most densely populated area of the city, 12.000 people per square mile. The borough has a population of over 260.000 people and covers an area of 21.61 square miles.

Chiswick is one of the borough’s most populous and well-known districts. It is situated in the easternmost parts of Hounslow has an estimate population of 35.000 people. Chiswick House is perhaps the area’s most famous landmark. The Palladian Villa was constructed during the first half of the 18th century and was designed by Lord Burlington. The estate (gardens included) spreads over 26.33 hectares and is considered by many architectural experts to be the finest work of Lord Burlington. Chiswick House is listed as a Grade I edifice and is considered to be one of London’s most beautiful buildings. Other noted sites in Chiswick, W4, are:

  • Duke’s Meadows

The suburb of Hanworth, TW13 is located on the outer edges of London and is home to over 20.000 people. The area is internationally known for being once the site of the Hanworth Aerodome. It was at this grassed airfield that Amelia Earhart landed after she reached Ireland during her 1932 flight over the Atlantic. The aerodome was also a docking point of the Graf Zeppelin airship before it continued its trip to the United States of America. The airfield was fully operational from 1917 to 1919 and from 1929 to 1947.

Gunnersbury, W4, is one of the smallest districts in Hounslow. The area gives its name to Gunnersbury Park which is one of the borough’s largest and most beautiful green areas. It is the location of the Gunnersbury Park Museum and an 18th century temple which is the only edifice of its time still to be standing in the park. The district is linked to the other parts of the city by its own station which was opened in 1869 and sits on lines from the London Overground and the London Underground. It is used by almost 2.5 million people on a yearly basis.

The area of Cranford lies in the western parts of the borough at about twelve miles from the junction of Charing Cross and is close proximity to the eastern perimeter of Heathrow Airport (Britain’s largest airport). It has a population of about 12.000 people and unlike the aforementioned areas it isn’t the location of many major landmarks which is why it is described as a peaceful and tranquil residential suburb.

Hatton, TW14, shares a common boundary with Cranford, TW5, and just like its neighbour is classified as a desirable residential area due to its lack of famous sites and places of interest. It is served by its own tube station which was opened during the mid-1970s and sits on the Piccadilly Line from the London Underground Network. According to the latest number it provides transportation services to 3.2 million passengers on a yearly basis.

Feltham is a suburban town which lies in the western parts of Hounslow and is home to almost 30.000 people. It is the location to several well-known places of interest such as St. Dunstan’s Church, Feltham Green, The Centre and the Feltham Magistrates’ Court. Throughout the years several notable people such as Freddie Mercury, Jimmy Page, Vic Briggs, Dr. Thomas Denman, Derek Martin, Edmund Goulding and more have lived in the area. Feltham, TW13, has been served by its own railway station since 1848.

The district of Heston, TW5 is another Hounslow area which is known for being the location of a former aerodome. It was from the Heston airfield that British Prime Minster, Neville Chamberlain flew to Germany in 1938 in order to have talks with Adolf Hitler. The district is home to some of the borough’s most acclaimed primary and secondary schools. St. Leonard’s Church is arguably the area’s most prominent structure.

East Bedfont, TW14 is a sub-area that lies in the district of Bedfont in the western parts of the borough. The area is the location of several popular buildings which attract both local and foreign visitors. The Burlington House is perhaps the most famous edifice in the neighbourhood. It is also home to two Non-League football teams: Bedfont Sports F.C and Bedfont and Feltham F.C.
